World Otter Day Book by OSG

The IUCN/SSC Otter Specialist Group (OSG) launched its amazing new Otter book just in time for World Otter Day 2023. You can celebrate otters year-round with this lovely illustrated book on otter folktales, myths, and legends.

The idea for this book was borne from a small group of otter enthusiasts that work as volunteers for the IUCN/SSC Otter Specialist Group (OSG)—more information on the organization is below. 15 artists and 3 authors worked on the book for nearly a year to produce a collection of 18 stories based on legends around the globe.

Each story is illustrated by a unique piece of art in different styles, according to the artist’s preference. Otter Things’ owner and illustrator, A. T. Baron, contributed her St. Cuthbert – Patron Saint of Otters illustration to the book.

Otters – Folktales, Myths, and Legends is so much more than a simple book: it’s a miniature art exhibition, a conversation piece, an educational tool, and a direct way to support otter conservation. Otter Things hopes this collaboration inspires artists and scientists to help each other with causes close to their hearts.

More On The Otter Specialist Group

The Otter Specialist Group (OSG) is part of the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It has brought otter researchers together since 1974 to lead global otter conservation.

The aims of the OSG are to provide leadership for the conservation of all otter species (Lutrinae), determine and review the status and needs of otters, promote the implementation of necessary research, conservation, and management programs by appropriate individuals, organizations, and governments and, lastly, to make known the status and conservation needs of otters, promoting the wise management of otter species.

This includes awareness, educational material, and the promotion of art, which the authors and artists strive to do with this first published volume of Otters – Folktales, Myths, and Legends.

There are 13 species of otters in the world, spread throughout the globe on all continents except the North and South Poles and Oceania. All of them are fundamental tassels in their environment and can be considered umbrella species whose conservation promotes the flourishing of the whole ecosystem they live in. This book is important to otter conservation because it will reach different audiences and help spread the otter love …and funds! All proceeds collected will go to one of the many conservation projects that the OSG promotes and will be sent directly to those projects.
